I haven’t been posting much lately, and I think I’m going to officially take a break from blogging for the rest of Summer Break. I may post something of interest now and then, but nothing planned. I have a few things to work out. If you want something more from me to read, you can catch up on old posts or read some of my poems. I’ll still be reading blogs, so you’ll see me around!
I'm seriously considering a summer break too from blogging. I feel like I'm in a funk when I sit down to write something. And I've been super busy away from the computer.
ReplyDeleteHi Mary,
ReplyDeleteYou left a comment on the BookEnds blog asking about War of the Words (or similar) and still querying. My view is that WotW (and similar) is that their contracts are generally pretty poor, and since they're non-negotiable, there's nothing an agent could do about that. Even the 20% royalty is a bit misleading, because it's on net, so it about equals the hardcover industry standard of 10% anyway. So really, any agent who would love the work would MUCH prefer you query them without tying their hands to the contest and making it so your work doesn't get the advance it would probably deserve. And winning the contest only to get an agent and go to a different publisher wouldn't be in the spirit of the contest and might be covered by their legal language somewhere. If something has been rejected by every agent, then go ahead with the contest, especially if those rejections were close calls. But my belief is that, usually, if something can win a publishing contract, then it can garner agent attention and be picked up as well.
