Go, Go, Go!

Over the weekend, we had the brilliant “duh” idea to salvage the video card from the unused PC in the closet. So I’m back on my own PC. Can’t go high res for games, but I don’t plan on gaming much this month anyway.

Because yesterday started NaNoWriMo! For those unfamiliar, National Novel Writing Month is the crazy month where writers start with word one on November 1 and have 30 days to finish a novel (50,000 words for a win).

I don’t plan on as much productivity on weekends, so set my weekday minimum as 2000 words. Stephs challenged me through twitter to write 2250, then after I beat it in the afternoon, raised the bar to 3200 words. I didn’t want to miss Castle, so had to get my words in between dinner and homework and tv. But I did it! Final count for the day was 3230.

Knowing me, without her pushing me I would have stopped writing once school was out. Yay for some friendly competition!

And now that I woke up sick this morning, I am extra glad I pushed myself yesterday. My word count will likely be lower. I’ll just leave the document open and add to it here and there, keep plodding along.

For those also participating, check out the Writer Unboxed post on putting the NANO in NaNoWriMo, with a clever acronym for tips to help you get through the month.

Computer Ughs

Video card officially the problem. Can't even get it to work with basic drivers. I'm going to boot in safe mode and transfer some things over to a thumb drive. Then I can work on my husband's computer or on the old PC in the back room. Just glad I'm not completely cut off.

Wonky Computer

Tuesday night I was playing a video game when the screen went wonky with colored lines and I had to manually shut down. Usually that happens when the video card is overheating, so I sprayed out the dust, made sure all the parts were secure, and let it sit overnight. Next morning, seemed to boot up fine. I clicked to open an excel item, and hello Aurora Borealis. Looked like a modern art landscape with all the curvy colors. Shut back down and used my husband’s computer until he was off work.

Hubby messed with my computer when he got home. After trying some things, and some research online, the problem appears to be the RAM on the video card going out. Ugh. We really can’t afford a new card right now. Thankfully, he worked it out so my PC is using only the basic VGA graphics. I can’t run any games, or make full use of my monitor, but I can still use the internet and write.

On the plus side, that means less distractions for NaNoWriMo. I’m just glad I’m not stuck using my husband’s computer (or the old one in the back room) for writing. And I still have consoles for gaming, so it’s not the hugest loss. Just no MMOs, Sims, Civ… So staying positive.

My Writing Space

Thanks to some of the inspiring workshops at the Muse Online Writers Conference, a Barnes and Noble gift card, and the upcoming NaNoWriMo, I finally got around to REALLY decluttering my work space this last week.

I don’t have a before picture, but imagine a desk with a stack of various sized papers on the left, hidden under notebooks. Pens always getting lost, to do lists hidden. No wonder I didn’t notice when I lost my first bliss book. Now that I’m really happy with my space, I’m determined to keep it clean.

Mary's Desk

How my clutter-less desk will help free me:

  • I bought a gorgeous butterfly day planner, so I won’t have a million little papers all over my desk.
  • I also got a large hardback notebook (for writing related stuff only) to sit on my desk, which won’t fit if the space is cluttered (motivation!).
  • I found a nice pen to use with my new planner and notebook. All three of which will fit in my shoulder bag nicely.
  • Owl City and Celtic music not only in easy reach, but not hidden by a stack of whatever.
  • Scented hand lotion to soothe and refresh. Currently, vanilla.
  • Not shown is a pink water bottle which sits on the desk calendar. Need to keep hydrated.
  • Worry stone in easy reach for while thinking/stressed, instead of hidden in drawer.
  • Computer desktop is nicely organized using Fences, a free program from Stardock.

Butterfly Planner Flower Notebook

What hasn’t changed are all the little friends on my top shelf. I don’t have as many folders and books up there to crowd them anymore, and do need to keep them dusted. And that pile of stuff in front of the white bear needs to get hung somewhere. Choir medal from graduation, dream catcher, and bead lizard.Desk Shelf

Ideally, and maybe someday when we have a bigger house, I would have an entire office or nook, with a separate computer for writing only. What’s your writing space like?

Soon!

Two days until the move! Our phone/internet provider, and our heating/gas company, both don’t end services on the weekend. So, as this is a long weekend with the holiday, our options were to end services on Friday or Tuesday. We didn’t want to get billed for three days we won’t be here, so they’re getting shut off tomorrow morning. At least we already bought our prepaid cell phone. This is my last day of internet for a while. We’re going to switch to Comcast, so hopefully we can get that set up in the next couple weeks (sooner rather than later).

On a good note, at least we will have electricity. They do weekends. Today is big laundry and dishes day, as we won’t have any hot water tomorrow. Not a bad thing, as the day will be busy packing. My husband has already asked for Friday off so we can get everything done with less rushed stress.

We’ll have the weekend to settle into our house. It looks so much better than when we bought it. Fresh paint in most rooms. New carpet in the den. A few new doors. So exciting! Looking forward to living there, not just working there.

I will miss checking in on my blogging friends. I will blog again when I’m connected. Love you all!

Updated Snap Shots

I’ve had this on my site for a while, but realized some of the settings were no longer active, and don’t remember if I ever introduced it. So…

Introducing Snap Shots from Snap.com

I just installed a nice little tool on this site called Snap Shots that enhances links with visual previews of the destination site, interactive excerpts of Wikipedia articles, MySpace profiles, IMDb profiles and Amazon products, display inline videos, RSS, MP3s, photos, stock charts and more.

Sometimes Snap Shots bring you the information you need, without your having to leave the site, while other times it lets you "look ahead," before deciding if you want to follow a link or not.

Should you decide this is not for you, just click the Options icon in the upper right corner of the Snap Shot and opt-out.

Tuesday Tally: What I learned last week

EotF Update

total words to date: 94,627

pages: 417

chapters revised: 27/27 (draft 5)

T.C. Status

word count: 1471

This Months' Goals:

  • Finish uploading the recent version of EotF to WDC at one or two chapters a day, including the elusive chapter 26, by Oct 11
  • have a poetry chapbook outlined and other assignments ready for Muse Conf, which starts Oct 13
  • use latter part of month (20-31) to put all that aside and make progress on TC
  • to accomplish all of the above, spend at least two hours daily (at least M-F) on writing related activities

The Muse Online Writers Conference was a brain-load of information, and a boost in creativity. I didn't keep up with all the workshops I signed up for initially, but the forums will be open for another month so I can go in and copy any information I want to save. The workshops I put the most time in were both poetry related.

The Creative Block Buster for Poetry workshop had a one-hour chat every morning Monday through Friday in addition to the forum. The chats were very enlightening. We brainstormed, discussed, and learned techniques to free our stuck poems. I learned how to listen to my poetry. I workshopped two poems during the week, and am very happy with the end results for both. Lisa Gentile, the presenter, had a power outage and was not able to make the Friday chat. I think it was a blessing in disguise for the rest of us. We talked about what we had learned, and by the end of the hour we had decided to put together an anthology of poems improved by the course, and meet again for future chats. Essentially, we formed a Poetry Group. Yay! We'll be meeting once a month to chat. Very exciting.

The other one I focused on was How to Turn Your Poetry Into a Saleable Chapbook. Yes, a mouthful, but an educating one. With encouragement, I went with the dark theme. Even my husband had once commented that a lot of my writing had the thread of darker emotion. The title I chose is Chiaroscuro. What, exactly, is my chapbook about? Exploring the darkness, bringing the monsters of death and abuse into the light. Thanks to the workshop, I have a completed chapbook, all formatted, and the tools to either submit or self-publish. I traded in-depth critiques with another member. Thanks to her feedback, I'm polishing/tightening the individual poems. My acknowledgements section is rather bare, so here's the plan:

    1. Polish poems (mostly tweaking, no major revamps; I'm not in the same place I was when I wrote them)
    2. Submit the best to various markets.
    3. Once I get some publishing credits, submit the chapbook as a whole to poetry chapbook publishers.

    (warning: rambling thoughts ahead)

Another Authoress Secret Agent contest recently ended. I made changes after the last one, and submitted a revised opening. The general consensus this time - opening much improved. However, my ratio of yes/no hooked didn't really go up. Out of 11 comments, 3 were definitely hooked, 4 definitely not, 2 said it was improved but still not quite hooked, 1 would read on for the genre though not quite hooked, and 1 would need to read the blurb first. Due to the tightened opening, an issue appeared on this first page that used to come up on a later page (see comments on opening, or skip to agent comment below to name that issue). I had received a couple comments prior saying it might turn off readers, or be a tough sell, but now that an agent and a couple more readers have expressed the same thing... and my husband admitted to not liking it as well... Gosh, tough stuff.

The event in question shapes my MC and though nothing is ever shown (trauma occurring before story opens), it does trigger some events and conversations in the first five or so chapters. No one seems to be bothered by the physical abuse, just the other kind. My husband did make the point that the issue is probably more that it appears so soon in the book, before the reader has a chance to really care about the characters. A backfired attempt to create reader sympathy (more a side effect, as the issue isn't there just for reader sympathy, but for character shaping and those aforementioned event triggers). I don't want to narrow my audience too far, or kill my chances to get an agent or publisher, if it really is that big of an Issue. So, in my next read-through and revisions, I will see if it is plausible to take out the problematic content. *sigh* Much work ahead.

    Analyzing the agent's comment:

I do like how this adds some backstory detail in without being obvious, but I'm just not feeling enchanted. I'm not a reader of this kind of YA, but what hooks me regardless is character. Work on making your characters deeper, even on first glance; if you're writing a fairy story, there's a temptation to mimic fairy tale language, and that keeps your characters flat. Add details that make them seem real and full of life. I also balked at the suggestion of sexual abuse ahead, it didn't seem to fit with the tone.

On a plus note, no one complained that my opening had "telling dialogue", instead I got complimented from the agent. One problem fixed at least. Another issue in that comment. She refers to it as YA. My story is not Young Adult. The MC does start out as a teenager, but that alone doesn't make a YA. Would the confusion be cleared up with merely the introductory query letter or back blurb? Most likely. The question is, does the opening voice imply YA? Any opinions on that matter are welcome.

... Well, that was quite an entry. Probably could have been broken into three parts. Kudos and thanks to all those who made it this far. Don't be shy about sharing your opinion on anything in this post. I need to hear it straight.

Additional question for any who might help: Today, whilst using Windows Live Writer to compose this post, pressing enter is frequently creating a bullet point rather than simply starting a new paragraph or line break. How do I make it stop?? I'm pretty sure all my list html is closed, yet it keeps spawning new ones... This post is a mess...

    Conan

I don't think I'll be on much the next few days. As my husband's computer isn't completely set up yet (just got parts this morning), he's using my computer for the Beta PvP event for Age of Conan this weekend. He's very excited. I, for one, have been enjoying running Oblivion on maximum graphics and settings. Looks so beautiful.

Not much of a Tuesday Tally

B's still sick. At least no one else is.

Not much to report on writing, as I haven't been able to access my old files since Friday (monitor, mouse, and keyboard hooked up on my new computer). Hopefully I'll get everything set up to transfer files tonight.

So far really liking my new PC and Windows Vista. Had to buy new desks Saturday though, as the computer case for this new one wouldn't fit in the cubby of the old one. Lots of new things to get used to.

    New Computer!

Monday we ordered parts for a new computer (prepping for Age of Conan). Today we got the last of the parts we needed. (Surprisingly, as the estimated arrival from one company wasn't until next Monday.) My husband is building it, first time doing so. This first one will be mine. Once we get it up and running, we'll order the parts for his. It will be nice having new computers. These are almost four years old.

    • one chapter critique - done
    • make arrangements to go to LTUE conf. Feb. 15, if at all possible to do so  - Mom agreed to watch B, and my husband got work off to go with me. :-)

    • one chapter critique
    • write new opening scene for EotF

Today I signed up for and downloaded Mozy , an online backup service. The free service stores up to 2GB of files. For $5 a month you can have unlimited storage. I don't need that much though. It's a lot quicker than burning all my info onto a disc, though I'll still do that probably once a year. Everything happens in the background. If you're interested, use my referral link, https://mozy.com/?ref=AF4GL1, and we BOTH get 256MB more free. :-)

Happy Holidays! (and bon voyage to Bon Voyage)

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and continue to enjoy the holiday season. We had a very white Christmas. On Christmas Eve we bundled up to go down to my parents, but didn't even make it to the car. It was snowing badly, very cold, and poor visibility. My husband refused to drive in it. The next day we learned his brother came up the other direction and it took him an hour longer than usual to get to his destination due to the storm, traffic, and accidents. Glad we weren't on the road.

I didn't miss the celebrations as much as I thought I would. I have lots of memories to draw on, and it was nice having a quiet Christmas with just us three. We ate cooked cereal for dinner which tasted very good after coming in from the cold. Then we watched the movie "A Christmas Story". B actually went to bed on time and slept in Christmas Day (until 8 am; his usual time is 6:30, so we were happy). We ate a big breakfast of waffles, sausage, and grape juice, got B dressed and let him discover his stocking while we took turns showering and getting ourselves ready, then took turns opening presents. Christmas Supper was Tyson Pork Roast Kit w/vegetables which we popped into the slow cooker for six hours. It was so yummy and we had leftovers last night, and enough meat that it will feed us for lunch as well. Next time we get one (and there will be a next time) we won't use the seasoning packet. It was good, but a little salty for our tastes. We don't use much salt and pepper, and even have to be reminded to put it on the table when we have company. We have decided that from now on we are celebrating Christmas Eve at home together, start our own traditions.

Presents were good. We all got some new clothes and books. I got a Book Lover's Desk Calendar, some new video games, and a lot of new music to listen to. My husband got the Spiderman movie trilogy, Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga, some anime, and music as well. B loves his Thomas the Tank Engine Hideaway tent (from us) and his doodle board (from Gma J). We also got a Signing Time pack with three DVDs and a music CD (from Gma W). B loves watching them and does really well imitating both the sounds and signs. B didn't get many toys this year (mostly clothes and books) so we bought him another one when we went to Walmart yesterday to exchange a gift (a duplicate from my wish list). He was very excited when we got the Hot Wheels V-Drop. You can never go wrong with something car or train related. Speaking of cars, he did get a remote control car, but won't be using it much until Summer as we don't have much space to run it inside.

Sadly, after a week of troubleshooting with EA support over my Sims 2 Bon Voyage game not working, it has been labeled unresolved (I do wish they had sent me one last email instead of just changing the tag on their site though). I have all the Sims2 expansions and when we tried uninstalling the whole thing and reinstalling I tried the game after each one and it works fine until the latest expansion. So the problem lies somewhere with Bon Voyage. It's rather depressing that they couldn't find out what the problem is. The game worked fine for three months but last week suddenly stopped working. Nothing changed on my system that I'm aware of. The game simply won't start. I click on the shortcut, get the launch screen, hit launch... get a spinning disc icon then nothing. It says the game is running under Processes in task manager, but that's it. The disc still works as I can install with no problem and My Computer recognizes the disc. Hopefully the next expansion will solve whatever the problem is. In the meantime, I guess I'll uninstall Bon Voyage and play with Seasons instead. At least that one works. I will have to start over though, as none of my saves are compatible with previous versions. Oh well. Starting over can be a refreshing change.

    Update

Tonight we are going to see Celine Dion. One of her Las Vegas performances was recorded and will be broadcast to select theatres participating in Fathom Events. It's a one night only event. And we got tickets! I'm very excited.

I was very happy to send B to school today. He woke up full of energy this morning (even singing before getting out of bed). P was feeding off that and things were already getting crazy for the half hour they were together. It's been so nice having my husband work from home the majority of the week (due to icky parking issues at work). Today he volunteered to take B out and wait for the bus. It's been so cold lately.

It has been reconfirmed that electronics don't like me. My Sims 2 Bon Voyage suddenly won't run anymore. Apparently it's not just me. I looked on the forums and others have played just fine for months until it up and won't run anymore. Don't get an error or anything, just hit play on the launcher, get a spinning disc icon, then nothing. *sigh* At least there seems to be a solution. Sounds complicated, but I'll mess with it today. At least it's not the disc itself, or my computer. It's an issue with the software. But that same day (yesterday, that is) I went to turn on a CD in the kitchen while I fixed dinner, and my CD player doesn't work anymore. :-( It will play the radio just fine, but won't spin or recognize discs. I guess it had to die eventually. I've had it for about ten years now. Guess I'll stick to listening to the radio in the other room.

One week until Christmas Eve! Got your shopping done? I didn't bother putting up the tree this year. By the time I was done with one of the puzzles from my birthday, only had a couple weeks left until Christmas. Don't have a lot of space out in the front room, and we don't spend a lot of time out there anyway. So I left the card table up instead, put a red tablecloth on it, and a Santa figurine to watch over the presents. Much less work than shaping and decorating a tree. Happy Holidays everyone!

    thoughts on Windows Live Writer

I've been using Windows Live Writer for two weeks now. I'm getting used to the formatting - start new paragraphs in Normal or HTML view, as pressing enter does unexpected things in the other view modes. I'd like a font size change shortcut on the toolbar, but it is changeable under fonts under format. One thing that did throw me off is the Web Preview. It looks wrong. But I found out it's showing the IE version. I hadn't ever seen my blog through IE. Don't care for it honestly. Too many spaces. I much prefer the Firefox view. Once I figured out the difference it's not a problem.

I LOVE being able to compose and save drafts offline. My main problems come in trying to actually post an entry, as it doesn't want to connect very often, but that's my typical connectivity problem, NOT Windows Live Writer problem, and the reason I like having it saved offline.

I have yet to get a plugin to install. I've downloaded one, but it gave me an error "must have Windows Live Writer installed." Umm, I do have it installed, and that's where I got the link to the plugin page... Oh well. Maybe it's a version issue. What I want is a plugin for easy copy/paste from webpage (namely blog) or some sort of blog template. I copy/paste the previous week's Tuesday Tally to easily do the new one each week, moving goals from this to last week, etc. I may have to make my own template, save the HTML elsewhere.

    Tuesday Tally and computer issues

    Status of my novel

    total words to date: 63,118
    pages: 273
    completed chapters: 12

    Last week's goals:
    • keep working on 100 day challenge - almost done!
    • write Fantasy newsletter - got it turned in 3 days early
    • make revisions to last section of Mirror - made some, filled in some needed transition. not done with all major changes though.
    • write at least one scene in Emergence - finished the single scene today
    • make up new word (for contest) - made up three new words, and also entered a feyan word from my novel. will share them next week, after contest is over. though you can scroll down and see them in comments on contest

    Goals for this week:

    • keep working on 100 day challenge
    • write W.W. newsletter
    • fix at least one of the two major problems left with Mirror
    • write at least one scene in Emergence
    • decide what to do with freewebs blog
Remember that new drive I got? Well, it wasn't entirely effective. For some reason it won't read audio files. That meant no playing music CDs and having to install games through my hubby's computer to get around the errors every time it got to a an audio file and couldn't read it. But I got Sims2 Bon Voyage expansion, and the disc wouldn't let me install it the roundabout way. So, we ordered me another new drive which arrived yesterday. Working great! The other one we'll keep as backup, as it does play games just fine once they were installed. I am completely cursed when it comes to computers. Anyway, my husband surprised me by getting me a new keyboard as well! The Dell one was very cheap. Now I have a nifty, high quality, Eclipse keyboard. I'd find a pic or something and link it, but my internet is being stupid again. *sigh*

*update - you can now see my nifty new keyboard by clicking on the link above

    Computer issues

Last week my DVD drive stopped reading. No Sims2, listening to audio CDs through my headphones, and the necessity to buy a new drive before Tuesday. The new Civ4 expansion comes out tomorrow! It has uber cool scenarios (fantasy, historical, and futuristic), many more civilizations, and is the biggest Civ expansion yet. So excited! Understandably, Saturday we went to CompUSA to buy me a new DVD drive (with burner this time, as it's now standard). We got lucky on the timing. We picked out the one we wanted, took it to the checkout, and learned there was an unadvertised, 2-day only, $20 instant rebate. Then they handed us a form for another $20 mail in rebate from the manufacturer! Couldn't have been a better time to get a replacement.

There were problems with it though. The box was opened and likely already returned and reboxed from someone who had the same problem we encountered - would burn CDs just fine, and read discs, but kept freezing when burning DVDs. We took it back to the store and they had to root around for another one, but we finally got it replaced for a new unopened one (which works great). Tomorrow is a state holiday, so I'm hoping the game gets in early so I can play it lots. =)

Lesson: Don't buy computers from Dell. We paid lots for cheap parts (even look/feel cheap). In the three years we've owned our two computers, we've had to replace my mouse, disc drive, hard drive, and video card; my hubby's computer has needed new keyboard, power supply, and video card. They didn't come with the stickers with Windows OS Key (I think that was it) and the checklist never mentioned needing to look for them so we didn't realize they weren't on the computer or elsewhere until I got my new hard drive and we needed the number. Took a lot of convincing for them to send us new ones for free. What's going to go out next?
