C is for Chiaroscuro

Chiaroscuro (kee-ar-uh-SKYOOR-o): The contrast and balance between light and dark.

Chiaroscuro is the title of my upcoming poetry book being published by SynergEbooks. Today I’m going to share how the collection came to be.

Back in 2008, I took a course at the Muse Online Writers Conference called “How to Turn Your Poetry Into a Saleable Chapbook.” I had a lot of poems under my belt and wanted to create a cohesive collection.

I looked over all of my poems, and sorted them into themes. I found a lot of them were on the darker side: death, pain, abuse. Of course, a lot of those were from my teenage days. You know how teenage angst can get. But I still use poetry to deal with the darkness.

With encouragement, I went ahead with the dark theme. Chose my title, Chiaroscuro. My initial tag line was: Exploring the darkness, bringing the monsters of death and abuse into the light.

What was initially a 25 poem chapbook, later expanded to a book length collection so I could enter it into a local writing competition. I didn’t win, but I did get valued feedback from my peers, and wrote what is now the introduction.

Within us resides a tapestry of darkness and light. It is woven into our hopes, fears, dreams, and secrets. To understand the tapestry leads to knowing ourselves. Follow these threads of dark and light. You may be surprised at what lies hidden, lost, or wandering.

Last year during April Poetry Month I wrote some promising poems that fit the theme, so I polished those to fill out the content some more.

And now it’s on its way to becoming a digital book. Here’s a glimpse inside:

Anniversary

The door lifts to the bleak garage--
flashbacks barrage,
emotions show,
eyes overflow.

One year has passed since he's been gone;
my heart's withdrawn.
His red race car
sits like a scar.

My finger traces through the dust
as thick as lust;
I draw a heart
and then depart.

A is for... Adventure to Agony

I actually wrote two poems today. The double prompt from Poetic Asides is a beginning and an ending poem. So I wrote one for each.

Gypsy

I open the door
breathe in fresh spring air
of a new day--
My day
to take as I please.

I secure a pack to the bike,
six string on my back
no school, no job
just me and the open road.
A trip to nowhere and anywhere
to find myself.

Stop on a whim--
barter for a bed or
play for my supper,
new faces and places
shape my music.

Each day a new adventure.

No More Running

Feral growls chase me
I duck through broken fence,
only to find more dead ahead
pouring from the house.

I turn back, but the way is blocked;
dirty torn fingernails reach through fence
tear into my flesh--
I stagger back
with my own feral scream.

Find shelter in an empty shed,
hands pressed to my gut
I sink to the floor
back bracing the door.

Tears and blood pour from me,
Infection ripping
through my veins,
the pain a constant jab…

Is this it? The end?
No more stargazing
or chocolate
or kisses.
Alone.
In agony.

With bloody fingers I clasp
the key hanging from my neck
until the teeth
dig into my skin.

The key to your heart…
I drift away,
remember our wedding day
promises of love eternal.

Horror snarls
as the door cracks
reminds me that death did us part.

I sob,
pain of body and heart
too much to bear.

Envious of the mindless moans,
the painless existence of
the once dead,
I open the door.

Welcome the horde.

A Month of Poetry

April is National Poetry Month. A month to celebrate the magic of words. The power of poetry. To celebrate, I’m going to participate in a couple different challenges.

NaPoWriMo (National Poetry Writing Month)

Inspired by NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), NaPoWriMo is about writing poetry. I’ll be aiming for a poem a day, but life and inspiration may have other results in mind. Whether a single new poem, or a poem a day, or even more, any new poetry is a success. Here are a few places I may be pulling prompts from.

The Poetic Asides blog on WritersDigest.com has an April PAD challenge. That’s a Poem A Day. Each morning there will be a new prompt, and top poems posted to the blog for each prompt will be compiled into a book.

The NaPoWriMo site will also have prompts. A few other sites I may visit if I need more inspiration: Poetry Prompts, The Journal Prompts, and 30 Day Poetry Challenge.

A to Z Blogging

I’m also taking the A to Z blogging challenge. So each day in April (except Sundays), I will posting with a letter theme, A to Z. So check back throughout the month for new and old poems, quotes about poetry, and more.

News about Chiaroscuro

One of my goals for this year was to publish my poetry collection Chiaroscuro. Last year I researched publishers, and compared their sites and stats.
I made a list of what I most wanted in a publisher. It wasn't about the royalty. It was:
  • clear information
  • print options
  • listed response time
  • ease of submitting (email)
I know self-publishing is an option, especially for poetry, but I’d prefer to go through a publisher for the formatting, marketing, cover book, all those things that intimidate me. It’s a process I’d rather not go through alone.
One of my top choice was SynergEbooks. I am very impressed by their website, and how much information they give in the process and what to expect, and what they expect of their authors.
I didn’t have to wait long after querying SynergEbooks to get a response. They were impressed with my sample poems. They were very upfront to answer the few questions I had, and less than a week later I was signing an Author Contract.
I am very happy to be working with SynergEbooks to publish my poetry book. No release date yet. It will be published digitally and available through the publisher website, as well as on Amazon.com and B&N.com. If it does well enough, there is a possibility for a print version.
In preparation for publication, I have created a site dedicated to my Chiaroscuro poetry book. I will be creating individual sites for each of my major projects, where you can learn more, read excerpts, and get news on their status.

Fairy Fridays on Facebook

This week I created my official Facebook Author Page. You can like me on the handy button to the left of my blog, or go to https://www.facebook.com/MaryWJensenFanPage. I've started up Fairy Fridays. Each Friday I will post to my Author Page something about fairies, whether it's a picture, something from one of my books, or other fairy fun.

Bring Your Teddy Bear to Work Day

As a writer, my teddy pretty much attends work every day. But I figured this would be a great time to repost my Teddy Tribute.

Cocoa: the cuddly kind, not the edible kind
originally posted 11/14/07

I am grateful for teddy bears. My bear Cocoa was given to me when I was ten years old. My family was about to move to the other end of the state, and my best friend threw me a going away party. I got gifts from various friends, and the bear was what she gave to me. The moment I saw him I knew his name. Moving away from all my friends was very hard for me. That night after getting Cocoa, I fell asleep holding him. He represented all I was leaving behind.

Cocoa was always a comfort to me. I slept with him every night, even taking him on sleepovers and campouts. He soaked up many tears, and was always there. I've written two poems about him. The first one I wrote in Junior High and was my very first Haiku. It was sometime during High School that I wrote the second.

Brown, soft, and furry,
He comforts me through the night--
My teddy Cocoa.

My Teddy
I live a lonely life these days,
There's not much that can comfort me;
Just a letter from a friend, my life-long journal,
And Cocoa, my cherished teddy.
A bear will always listen,
And never dispute a claim;
Won't ever tell your secret,
Or give away the game.
He'll always be there for you,
If you just want to talk,
Or need something to hold to,
Like algae to a rock.
He'll never walk away from you,
Or leave you all alone.
He's more a comfort to me
Than talking on the phone.
I love my teddy Cocoa,
He means so much to me.
I'm not complete without him,
Just leaves without a tree.

As a confession, I slept with him up to the night before my wedding. There were times I even took him to school with me. It was a comfort knowing he was there in my backpack, and I took him out during lunch as I sat at my locker. I didn't care what people thought. Even now, when I'm not feeling well or having a bad day, I will cuddle up with him. He's the one stuffed animal I won't let B  play with. So many memories wrapped up in one bear.
