Wasn’t sure what to write about today, so dug up the 5,000 Questions and found where I’d left off.

704. If you were alone in your friend's house/room/apartment would you look in their drawers and notebooks? Ooh. Tough one to say without being in the situation. I think that would totally depend on the friend. I probably wouldn't poke into drawers, but would more likely peruse things more in the open.

705. What would you really like to do but you don't because you are afraid of getting caught? hitch-hiking. It appeals to my sense of adventure, and that itch to travel that I haven't been able to fulfill.

Not being familiar with any of those, based off the names and description, I'd go with Front 242.

Though, interesting enough, the writers do seem to correlate to the genres of my books. So maybe the analyzer isn’t completely bunk after all. I’m not familiar with James Joyce or William Gibson, but I can see the connections for the rest.

I guess that is the ideal traveler me. So far it’s all in my head! I so want to travel, see the world. Go backpacking in the Amazon, climb the pyramids, walk on the beach, explore a castle. *dreamy sigh*

 

Our vacations growing up were never big ones. Can’t afford to go far with a family of nine kids. I got to go to San Francisco my senior year in HS, for our choir tour. That was a lot of fun. But we weren’t allowed to go to the beach, and there’s only so much we could do outside the itinerary (though what we did do was awesome). I want to explore, though.

 

Even in video games I’m the explorer. I love discovering new areas, revealing the map from the fog. Whether it’s an MMO or Civilization game or RPG.

 

Maybe that’s why none of my stories take place near home. I’m exploring the world through my characters. And I’ve always been fascinated by the world’s wonders: Easter Island, Stonehenge, the Pyramids of Egypt and South America. My dream vacation would have to include a trip around the world. My very first novel attempt (I was eleven or so) was called The World Wide Contest, about a group of kids who won an educational/diplomacy trip around the world.

 

Anyway, a bit sidetracked? I came to write about my dream vacation. Though all out dream is unrealistic, so we’ll go with an uber-vacation that’s doable within the next five years.

Going on a cruise. I will take my husband only. (Son can stay with his grandparents.) Most likely go in fall, just before school starts. Costs below. Will take a while to save up.

 

All out dream trip? World cruise. That’s a 106 day voyage though. Don’t think that’s happening until after my son graduates high school (aka 13 plus years from now). Oceanview room would be $63,189.88 for two, including fees. Heh. Anyone have a winning lottery ticket they’d be willing to give up? That’s more than two years salary… By the time we saved that much, prices would probably even higher. *sigh* Let’s see… if we round that up to $70k… saved up $200/month… that’s 350 months of saving… or 30 years. $250 a month would drop that to 23 years. Either way, not any time soon. There’s probably cheaper world cruises, but likely all equally out of my budget. Well, I just wasted a big chunk of my day drooling over that.

 

Okay, let’s settle for a much cheaper cruise. A 7-day Caribbean Cruise is more in the range of $2,000 for two. Plus money for the round trip flight to the port. Plus souvenir money. Plus passport money. Gosh, no wonder my husband doesn’t like the planning. Umm. We could probably save up, set aside some of our tax return money each year, and plan on a cruise for our 10 year anniversary in 2012. That’s not terribly far away, and would be a great event.

 

Okay, my head hurts. Time to play Sims 3 (and look forward to the newly announced expansion pack World Adventures, which comes out in November). Wow, that post got long… Lemonade, anyone?

621. Do you mind being described as cute? not at all. go right ahead. ;-)

622. What is the tackiest object in your home? The ancient, falling apart dresser that was old when my sister got it; she used it for many years before it got handed down to me. It is one item that won't be coming with us when we move. We can't even use one of the drawers, it's braced so that it won't fall into the drawer below it. And the bottom keeps coming out of another. Chipped wood, nails that keep inching their way out. It's quite a sad thing to look at.

623. What do you think people are most ignorant towards? other cultures

624. What is it that makes you an interesting person? my openness, quirks, and contradictions. as a reader, feel free to comment on this :-)

605. Are you comfortable with the idea of your own death? no. It would devastate my family, and I'm certainly not ready to die. But what scares me more than actually dying is the pain that would most likely precede it.

606. How do you feel about arranged marriages? They can work, but the key there is work. I think a person has a better chance finding a compatible match on their own, than being arranged by parents or some other party. Chemistry is something that cannot be predicted. The "perfect match" on paper does not always work out.

610. Is time more like a highway or a meadow to you? Mostly a meadow. Living in the now, able to observe both ahead and behind. Occasionally, the highway will barge through and drag you along, giving you no choice but to keep eyes on the road ahead and keep moving so you don't become road kill. But the meadow moments are definitely preferred.

615. If you could force someone to fall madly in love with you, (anyone you choose) would you do it? No. For a couple reasons. One, if it's forced then they don't truly love me for me. Two, the 'madly' part could have unwanted consequences. They may end up completely possessive (see the movie Prom Night), or protect me in ways I don't need or want (as in Terry Goodkind's The Sword of Truth series (haven't read the books myself, but heard about them, and watched some of the tv series based on it, The Legend of the Seeker)).

Geeky Fun

Update on gaming problem: I found the option to slow down the cursor/rotation speed, which has helped greatly. I can now play for greater periods of time. No nausea, and only a minor headache after playing for multiple hours. I made some good progress in game today. :-)

My Mom came up today. We all went out to lunch at the Training Table, then the two of us played Lost Cities while B played with Yahtzee dice and ran around us. It was good visiting with her. It's not often anymore that I'm not babysitting and she's not working.

33. Is there a cause you believe in more than any other cause? No. There are so many good causes out there. So many that I wouldn't know who or what to support. Maybe someday I'll be able to say differently.

21. Are you more of a giver or a taker? Wouldn't we all like to say givers? I admit that I tend to have blinders for the times I am a taker, but I know my tendency to be unobservant can result in selfish behavior.

22. Do you make your decisions with an open heart/mind? I try to.

23. What is the most physically painful thing that has ever happened to you? Giving birth. Though that wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Yay for an easy birthing, and anesthetics.

24. What is the most emotionally painful thing that has ever happened to you? I can think of two, one which impacted me for longer, but the second hurt me more emotionally. Neither I want to share here, but I have written extensively about both in my personal journal.

25. Who have you hugged today? My husband and my son.

26. Who has done something today to show they care about you? My husband kept me company while I ate breakfast, even though he had eaten earlier.

27. Do you have a lot to learn? Definitely. Learning is never over.

10. What song comes closest to how you feel about your life right now? Until I think of one more fitting, my strange mind is going to say Strange Boat by Waterboys (lyrics here).

11. Have you ever taken martial arts classes? No. (much easier to answer than #10. Lol)

12. Does your life tend to get better or worse or does it just stay the same? It fluctuates, but on a gradual uphill grade.

13. Does time really heal all wounds? Time does not. God can.

14. How do you handle a rainy day? A physically rainy day in summer – open the windows, smell the rain; winter – stay inside, go about as usual. Mentally rainy day – sulk, sleep, play video games that don't take much thought.

15. Which is worse...losing your luggage or having to sort out tangled holiday lights? Tangled holiday lights! I am getting an artificial tree that comes with lights some day. Though, truth is I've never lost my luggage… so that could be worse, depending on what's in it.

16. How is your relationship with your parents? Not super close, but good.
Will you miss them when they are gone? Of course. It would create a hole in the world.

17. Do you tend to be aware of what is going on around you? Umm, no… I'm pretty oblivious.

18. What is the truest thing that you know? I am alive.

19. What did you want to be when you grew up? Before I admitted to myself that I wanted to be an author, I wanted to be a dancer or an artist.

To help in my endeavor to blog every day this year, I'm going to start answering questions from The 5,000 Question Survey. They'll be scattered over many, many blog postings. On to the Q's...

 

1. Who are you? Mary W. Jensen. The 'W' is for my maiden name, Wilcox, a heritage I am very proud of. (I could put a lot more to answer this Q, but I'm sure the rest of the 5,000 questions will address much of it.)

 

2. What are the 3 most important things everyone should know about you? I am a mother, love fantasy, and am much more shy in person than online.

 

3. When you aren't filling out 5,000 question surveys like this one what are you doing? Reading, writing, playing video games, watching tv, interacting with my son, or browsing the web.

 

4. List your classes in school from the ones you like the most to the ones you like the least (or if you are out of school, think of the classes you did like and didn't like at the time). I hated English (ironic, eh?). I was good at it, just didn't like the repetitiveness or analyzing classics. Also on the dislike list was Fashion. I only took that class because I needed another half semester general credit. I was so out of place there. I surprisingly enjoyed my Social Studies class, mostly due to the charismatic teacher. On the highest rungs of the like list were choir and American Sign Language.

 

5. What is your biggest goal for this year? Sending EotF out into the big wide world of agents.

 

6. Where do you want to be in 5 years? In a house (or townhome) with a piano. I want to be published, or at least signed with an agent. I'm hoping it doesn't take the most of those years, but am prepared to stick through regardless.

 

7. What stage of life are you in right now? Mothering a preschooler, and establishing my own identity through my writing.

 

8. Are you more child-like or childish? I can be both. Probably more child-like, in the naïve, clueless about many things, type of way.

 

9. What is the last thing you said out loud? "Let's turn this down a bit", referring to my blasting DisneyMania CD, after noticing P.'s mom was no longer logged into her work MSN, which means she will be here soon, and I don't want to miss the knock.
